The latest statement made by Kanhaiya Kumar, former Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) President and leader of Communist Party of India (CPI), on how the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members are more interested in counting condoms in JNU than finding Najeeb Ahmed (a student of JNU who was reported missing in October 2016 ) highlights the misplaced priorities of the ruling dispensation.
To be honest, I didn’t know much about the case until today and after sifting through whatever is available on the internet about the events that occurred in October 2016 and its aftermath, I can’t find the appropriate words to express both my anguish and disgust over what has happened and how all of us have collectively failed Najeeb’s family, especially her mother.
Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year student of MSc (Biotechnology) at JNU, was found missing from the university campus on October 15th, 2016 after having been allegedly beaten by members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) which is also the parent organization of BJP.
Reports were filed in the police and their investigation proceeded at a snail’s pace while crucial time was being lost in finding Najeeb. The family made fervent appeals to authorities across the police, legal and political spectrum and several citizens, both from within and outside JNU, lent their support to the movement but nothing significant happened on the ground and it has been more than 3 years now and no one knows where Najeeb is.
Callousness all around
There were numerous reports about how the Delhi Police, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the courts and the JNU administration, including the Vice-Chancellor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, were lackadaisical and insensitive in their handling of the whole case which may have further diminished the chances of finding Najeeb. That they did all of this in full media glare makes their response even more damning and both the parties need to be held accountable for their actions.
No action has been taken against any of the nine people (allegedly belonging to ABVP) accused of beating up Najeeb on October 14th till now. Could these members or the organizations they are affiliated with be involved in Najeeb’s disappearance and isn’t it baffling to see that this angle has not been explored as seriously as it should have been? All this makes you feel like these people are being protected from the powers above while sending a not-so-subtle message that you can escape with anything as long as you belong to a certain group. The Prime Minister, as usual, maintains a stone deaf silence in this case without giving consideration to the incredible damage to his image.
As the premier investigating agency in the country, much more was expected from the CBI but they never fail to disappoint us and the fact that they had to file a closure report, in this case, is a heavy indictment of their
Watch the videos below which perfectly encapsulates the whole case and how any individual can be made to feel so in front of the absolute heartlessness of the Indian law enforcement system.
And if you have some more patience, watch the below video and understand the pain of the victim’s mother and everyone who supported her.
Indian media is beyond redemption
There is a huge question mark on the role of a section of our TV and print media ran unverified and completely misleading stories about Najeeb having links with the terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). National news agencies, which are supposed to be the ‘Beacon of journalism’, went around shamelessly insinuating that Najeeb was a potential terrorist based on a faulty story about search items related to that vile terror group in his browsing history (a story that was completely denied by Delhi Police).
Despite demands being made by Najeeb’s family that those news organizations which had leveled false allegations on him should issue an unconditional apology, none of them have done so to date, which makes you wonder whether you can trust these vile news agencies at all.
Social media was riddled with more such rumors and it took some timely reporting from news organizations like Alt News to disprove these baseless proclamations.
Is there any hope at all?
Reading about the case makes me wonder if all of us, including yours truly, have become so apathetic to the injustices that happen around us and will we forever remain unmoved by the cries of Najeeb’s mother, whose only wish is for her son to return back in the safety of her arms.
